Polydeck were contacted by Worcester County Council to repair five footbridges that had become extremely slippery after the timbers had become rotten. The Council needed a long-lasting non-rotting material that would provide a non-slip surface, ensuring the safety of users.

Bridge Decking Planks from Polydeck

Polydeck suggested its 45mm bridge decking planks which have been designed to replace traditional timber planks which can become slippery when wet and are subject to rotting and failure at fixing holes. The GRIPFAST bridge decking planks are made from non-rotting glass fibre which is guaranteed to last at least 30 years.

GRIPFAST bridge decking planks come in a range of patterns, colours and sizes.  The council specified planks with a castellated finished walking surface which contains a near-diamond-hard aggregate to provide a guaranteed slip-resistant surface. The castellated finish of the planks also provides channels for water to drain into, ensuring that the walking surface remains drier and safer for all user of the footbridge.

The bridge decking planks are designed to be fixed to timber or steel supports with countersunk stainless steel screws. When fixing to steel, planks can be fitted with either self-drill screws or M8 stainless steel machines screws and bolts.

The ends of each plank can be cut on site using a small hand-held angle grinder with a diamond-tipped blade, so the council were able to fit the bridge decking planks around the handrails. The cut ends do not need to be resealed but can be painted if visible.
