At Polydeck, our team work to provide clients with efficient anti-slip products, ensuring everyone gets a bespoke project which works for them.

In our most recent case study, Polydeck assisted Cheshire West and Chester Council, by refurbishing their Tower Wharf walkway with our GRP bridge decking planks.

Why did Tower Wharf need to refurbish their walkway?

Running alongside the river on the outskirts of Chester, the Tower Wharf walkway is frequently used by pedestrians and cyclists, therefore needed an efficient and safe solution when being repaired.

In 2018, the Council’s Bridge Engineers decided to revamp the entire deck with timber planks. However, the planks were beginning to rot, partially due to tidal from the river leaving the decking completely under water during certain times of the year.

It was essential a replacement material that could withstand these conditions was needed.

Alongside this, Chester council were looking for an environmentally friendly solution, and wanted to use a product that used recycled materials. Working with the council, Polydeck could provide the perfect anti-slip material.

How we used our GRP Bridge decking planks

We proposed the use of 45mm thick GRP bridge decking planks, manufactured using non-rotting glass reinforced fibre (GRP) and a special foam core which is created from recycled plastic bottles.

Working alongside the council’s term maintenance provider, Ringway, installation took place over two sets of two week periods.

Polydeck Limited first installed the GRP I beam supports, fixing the 45mm decking planks directly onto the I beam. A total of 800 planks were used to cover an area slightly in excess of 420 square metres.

With an integral near-diamond-hard aggregate, the decking provides a safe walking surface for pedestrians, whilst enhancing the ‘green credentials’ of the entire scheme using almost 60,000 recycled 500ml plastic bottles.

Principle Bridge Engineer, Dylan Davies from Cheshire West and Chester Council, commented “I am very happy with the job at Tower Wharf. Many thanks to all at Polydeck and Ringway for working so hard to help complete the scheme.

“The new decking is excellent and together with the new GRP beams it will provide a very durable solution to this well used promenade”.
