Polydeck carried out a project recently on behalf of Centregreat Limited, Network Rail and Arriva Trains Wales. It was decided that, following an inspection, the anti-slip surface on the footbridge at Penmaenmawr Railway Station was in need of renewal.

After further inspection of the footbridge it was found that the metal steps and panels had degraded to such an extent that they needed to be replaced. Centregreat Ltd were tasked with undertaking a full renovation of the bridge and Polydeck would supply the necessary panels and treads.

Anti-Slip Treads and Panels from Polydeck

Polydeck proposed the use of its Structural GRP Stair treads and panels. The treads comprised of a 12mm DDA compliant anti-slip tread and nosing fixed to structural foam core support beams. The anti-slip panels were also 12mm and were, again, fixed to structural foam core support beams. Anti Slip Panels are available for viewing online.

Due to the historic design of the bridge, each tread needed to be individually templated and then created specially by Polydeck. The client chose a diamond pattern finish on the treads and main span to compliment the design of the bridge structure.

The nosings of the anti-slip treads were given a colour constant and contrasting white or yellow finish. GRP riser plates were also fixed on site to close out the gaps at the back of the steps making it safer for children and enhancing the colour contrasting nosings as pedestrians approached the stairs.

Once the bridge had been repainted, the treads could be fitted. To ensure that both the panels and treads met all Network Rail requirements they were independently tested. Check out anti slip treads for stairs.
