Our dedicated team at Polydeck were recently contacted by one of our regular clients Galliford Try, to support in a step refurbishment project as part of Newport’s Crindau Flood Risk Management Scheme.
In our latest case study post, we look back at how we assisted Galliford Try with their efforts and provide information on how we can support you with your upcoming projects.
Why were the non-slip flooring experts at Polydeck approached?
Crindau Pill in Newport has historically been prone to flooding and the existing tidal defences were in a poor condition. Galliford Try, working on behalf of National Resources Wales for the Crindau Flood Risk Management Scheme, teamed up with Polydeck- an anti- slip flooring specialist- to refurbish the areas steps.
Together, both companies helped raise the existing defences using Polydeck’s 9mm plain gritted grey treads and black nosing on the newly constructed 3 sets of external concrete steps.
Why Polydeck were chosen to improve the defences at Crindau Pill
Polydeck treads are manufactured using glass reinforced polyester (GRP) meaning they won’t rot, warp or bow. Manufactured with tremendous durability, we can guarantee that our anti-slip GRP solutions will last for 30 years.
There are several advantages of using the high-quality GRP treads at Polydeck, such as:
- They are resistant to rotting
- Made with an effective anti-slip material
- Can be custom made and are available in an array of colour options
- Our GRP treads can be used internally and externally
- They have a guaranteed life expectancy of 30 years
- Can be used on a variety of different surfaces
Made from a near diamond hard aggregate, Polydeck treads can be used on a variety of surfaces such as timber, concrete, steel and are water, grease and oil resistant. As treads are available in a range of sizes, colours and finishes, this job was specified using 9mm grey, with a plain gritted finish.
Galliford Try chose a grey colourway to match the surrounding environment, a decision that made the finished product very aesthetically pleasing.
So that the steps were colour contrasting and complied with current DDA guidelines, black nosing’s were used, which also ensured further safety measures.
Nosing’s, once again, are manufactured from GRP making them an ideal anti – slip solution. Furthermore, they also help highlight the edge of individual steps to aid the visually impaired and are designed to specifically suit the requirements of the client.
Galliford Try, having used Polydeck’s products on many occasions, were delighted with the final result. The steps complied with all the necessary building regs and helped achieve their goal of improving the safety of the flood defences.
Jamie Douglas, one of the specialist engineers at Galliford Try, commented:
“The treads and nosing were light and easy to install allowing our installers to finish the work quickly and efficiently”.
