The station is famous for its long name, (Llanfairpwllgwyngyll-gogerychwyrndrobwll-llantysilio-gogogoch) and is a significant landmark on the Isle of Angelsey, being the only rail footbridge on the Island.

As part of a Network Rail programme to renovate various footbridges along with Penmaenmawr, Polydeck’s Structural GRP decking panels and treads were chosen as the preferred product choice. Designed, tested & approved to conform to all the standard load bearing requirements.

Llanfair PG station footbridge dates back to 1848, and has been subjected to a couple of refurbishments. Originally being constructed on timber, then enhanced by a metal deck the inclement weather systems have taken their toll and more recently led to increasing & on-going maintenance costs.

Versatile surfacing from Polydeck

The decision was taken to chosen to convert to Polydeck’s Structural Load Bearing GRP system to renovate the footbridge structure, a durable and very weather resistant material exclusively manufactured in our Bristol factory.

A unique system designed with The JNP Group and approved by Network Rail for use, it is based on a unique foam core beam supporting the deck panels and treads. This allowed the main contractor ‘Centregreat’ to refurbish the bridge with minimum downtime and maximum efficiency saving both time and cost.

The strictly DDA compliant nosings design require minimum maintenance and are easily cleaned so as to maintain the permanently colour contrasting requirement for the step edge.

Drainage slots were precisely cut and positioned so that the fall of the surface meant there is no ponding of excess water which in winter months leads to icing and further implications to safety of pedestrians walking on the anti-slip surface.

Being manufactured solely in our Bristol factory meant that the product lead times were greatly reduced with no delay of material as opposed to having delays by waiting for materials being importing from overseas.

Site issues were overcome as Polydeck were able to respond immediately to manufacturing re-makes allowing the main contractor to meet their deadlines.

In combination with GRP products designed and manufactured for individual footbridges, Polydeck have developed a unique structural GRP to renovate and re-deck station platform surfaces.
